Two Prominent Republicans Land in Montclair: Whitman, Aldrin (VIDEOS)

For the Montclair Republican Club, That Was The Week That Was.

Two prominent Republicans coming to Montclair…former New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman, and Montclair-born & -bred Republican astronaut Buzz Aldrin …can make you wonder if you’re in a Mercury Theatre tale. But yes, it’s all true.

Governor Whitman, New Jersey’s only female, and a two-term, governor, joined the Montclair Republican Club meeting as guest speaker on Tuesday, May 28. Over a terrific steak & seafood dinner at downtown’s new J & K Steakhouse, Whitman spoke eloquently for twenty minutes, took questions for another thirty, and mixed and mingled to everyone’s content. See our facebook page for photos from the evening, and watch her speech here:

Apollo 11 astronaut, Montclair’s man-on-the-moon, and inspiration for Toy Story’s character Buzz Lightyear, Buzz Aldrin returned to Montclair to be honored by the town this weekend. A 1947 Montclair High School graduate (where he played center on the MHS 1946 state championship team), Aldrin enrolled at the United States Military Academy at West Point, graduating third in his class. Following service in the Korean War, Aldrin completed his doctoral degree in astronautics at MIT. At the age of 39, he was the second person to step foot on the moon, on July 20, 1969. While adults of a certain age remember that night, Montclair schoolchildren and young adults can read his inspiring Wikipedia entry.  See his talk here (courtesy of Baristanet):

Next up: June 4, July 4.
